The close bond between the first created couple is easy to understand considering Eve was fashioned from Adam’s rib. But Adam is referred to as Eve’s “husband” in Genesis 3:6 – when did their wedding take place?

Our natural tendency is to examine Adam and Eve’s marriage through a modern cultural lens. …were they married in a church? …who was their pastor? …where are the vows recorded? …who was Adam’s best man? …where was the reception held?

Attempting to “validate” this first marriage by today’s wedding standards is like trying to legitimize the substance of an object by its shadow.

Adam and Eve didn’t need our modern ceremony to bond them in marriage – they were directly united by God Himself! In fact, the Bible says God actually “brought” Eve to Adam.

Adam and Eve didn’t need a ceremony to bond them in marriage – they were directly united by God Himself!

The bottom line is that the first wedding ceremony was overseen by God. Adam recognized this when he described Eve as “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh”. Formed out of Adam’s rib, Eve was joined to her husband by our Creator, and united with him in purpose to have dominion over all the animals.

It really doesn’t matter how our modern culture loosely defines marriage at any given time. GOD created marriage, so He is the only One who defines how a man and a woman are to be joined together in matrimony. And it’s not a state official or certificate that authenticates a marriage. These are just physical evidences of the spiritual bond that takes place through the wedding vows.

GOD created marriage, so He is the only One who defines how a man and a woman are to be joined together in matrimony.

True marriage is Biblical marriage between one man and one woman. It is both simple and profound. A man leaves his parents to be united to his wife and they become “one flesh” after making a sacred covenant before God and other witnesses.

The pomp and circumstance of today’s public wedding ceremonies are merely manifestations of a divine institution established by God – a lifelong covenant that is not to be broken, all tracing back to the first marriage in Eden.

Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
